Excerpt from Religious Progress: Discourses on the Development of the Christian CharacterThe following Lectures were originally prepared for the pul pit, and delivered to the people of his charge by the author. In a time, when the eyes of the nations are so generally strained towards the undefined and glowing horizon of the Future, and when the cry of Progress has awakened alike so much of soli citude and of hope, it seemed not unfitting that a Christian pastor should call his hearers to consider the elements and the laws of that higher moral progress stretching into eternity, of which the gospel of Christ witnesses, and for which the grace of God alone qualifies us. It was the belief of some of his hearers, that the re¿ections thus presented might find readers.
