Your Committee have gone through the papers referred to them, and have taken evidence on the question of Salaries of the Cape Government Rail way Staff, and have to report that they were more than surprised to learn that the salaries of Railway Officers are absolutely inadequate to the work and responsibility of their respective duties, without even taking into consideration their length of service, and the high cost of living in this country.

The evidence before the Committee clearly shows that in Great Britain, Europe, America, Canada and other Colonies, officers holding positions of much less importance are receiving anything from two to five times the salaries that are being paid here.
