In May, 1943, 16 pilots stepped ashore on a desert atoll, not knowing why they were there or what they were going to fly. Then a U.S. Navy ship arrived carrying 27 Douglas A-24 dive bombers. The Army pilots boarded the carrier, got a quick briefing, strapped into unfamiliar aircraft, fired up the engines, and held on.
