Romantic Biography of the Age of Elizabeth, Vol. 2 of 2

Excerpt from Romantic Biography of the Age of Elizabeth, Vol. 2 of 2: Or, Sketches of Life From the Bye-Ways of History

"The evil that men do lives after them, " but the evil that women do has greater extent and vitality, Mary's bigotry had many remote consequences which her historians have not traced, the leading Reformers who fled from her cruelties brought with them, on their return from exiles the principles of Puritanism and Republicanism which annoyed Elizabeth, perplexed James, and killed Charles. Our ecclesiastical historians of every party have touched but lightly on the influence which a residence in Geneva must have produced on the exiled preachers, they give to Knox, to Cartwright, to Browne, and to Peters the credit or discredit of the principles which belonged to Calvin, and they pass over the circumstances by which these principles were so fixed and strengthened that they resisted all the seductions of promotion and all the violence of persecution.
