Sea ice covers many millions of square kilometers and as such is one of the world's largest ecosystems. A full understanding of how sea ice forms and consolidates, what is its role as a habitat for biological assemblages and the ultimate fate of these organisms and their use as paleoenvironmental indicators is vital for polar research.
