Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 8

Excerpt from Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 8: Diocese of St. AsaphIn the distant days of the Plantagenets, Eyton, in his Antiquities of Shropshire, says, that Mines were worked in the Lime Rocks for silver, he bases his statement on the Pipe Rolls of 94 and 1195, which contain accounts of receipts and expenditure for some mining experiments carried on by John Le Strange of Ness, and Ralph Le Strange ofalvanley, successively Castellans of Carreghofa Castle - (within the parish of Llanymynech). These experiments were short lived, possibly owing to the small yield of the operations. But deep shafts and mounds of thrown up earth still witness to the fact that even as long ago as the time of the Romans this district was considered to possess mineral wealth, and the name Llanymynech can be translated Village of the Miners, though the Village of the Monks is another suggested interpretation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
