Fourteen year old Zanna longs for a friend to live close by. Her wish comes true when neighbours move in next door and she sees a girl her age walking down the path, but soon discovers that she is deaf. Zanna's mother invites the new neighbours for a Sunday Lunch. Zanna has a difficult time getting through to their daughter, Christine. Christine's mother offers to teach her sign language. Zanna is horrified at first but she soon masters signing. Some months later, Zanna is shocked to hear that Christine's father had been transferred to Cape Town. She vows she'll never again become friendly with any children living next door. But a surprise is in store for her.
