Derives its specific name from the color of its foliage which is silvery white beneath and bright green above. This species belongs to the chestnut oak group, the leaves are toothed and shallowly lobed. Swamp white oak may be identified by the acorns which are set on long peduncles and by the scaly bark on the trunk and twigs.
