Excerpt from Sketches of Church Life: In the Counties of Essex and Hertfordshire Forming the Diocese of St. Albans

The modern diocese even now, bereft of nine out of its ten counties, exceeds in size all the other dioceses, except St. Davids and Norwich, and has an area of acres. It has, therefore, been a necessity that the outlying members should receive only a comparatively small share of illustration at their hands.

The Diocesan History of London has yet to be written. From the earliest times the fortunes of the counties seemed to have been linked. The origin of their Christianity is Celtic, for without injustice to the Roman Mission of Mellitus, we assert it was a failure in Essex, while the disciples of the Celtic F inan of Lindisfarne succeeded in laying the foundations and building up the faith, both among the East Saxons of Essex and the Mercians of Hertfordshire.
