On one occasion only - it was in the Summer of 1862 - an attempt was made to sum up, and review, the work of the few preceding years. But, now, as a score of years have elapsed since I took charge of this pulpit, it would seem to be altogether proper to take some notice of God's dealings with us, and of the changes, whether for better or worse, which have occurred in the congregation.First Visit to Princeton.My first visit to Princeton was made in the year 1849, to attend the inauguration of Dr. James W. Alexander (with whom I had been, for several years, a co-presbyter in New York) as Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government, in the Theological Seminary. I had the advantage of having, as a companion, another co-presbyter, the Rev. John Goldsmith, D. D., of Newtown, Long Island, who was a graduate of the College in 1815, in the same Class with Dr. Hodge, and was matriculated with him in the same Class in the Seminary, in 1816.
