Leland Stanford was born in Albany County, New York, March 9, 1824. His youthful days were spent at work upon a farm. At twenty years of age, with such education as he had obtained from the opportunities offered him, together with his naturally keen intellect, he determined upon the study oflaw, and in the year 1845 entered the law office of Wheaton, Doolittle 8: Hadley at Albany. He was admitted to the bar in 1848 and sought a field for his professional labors at Port Washington, -vis., the same year. He was married to Miss Jane Lathrop at Albany in 1850. He arrived in California July 12, 1852, and joined his brother in the mining business at Michigan Blufi', Placer County, where he carried on a successful business for four years. In 1856 he moved to Sacramento and entered into the mercantile business with his brothers. Here Mr. Stanford displayed the natural aptitude of his mind for the administration of affairs of importance, conducted business transactions which led eventually to the plan and execution of his gigantic railroad project. He was chosen a delegate to the Chicago Convention in 1860 and assisted with his vote, the nomination of Abraham Lincoln. He was elected as Governor of California in 1861. In 1866 he was elected United States Senator from California, and re-elected to the same position in january, 1891, for six years.
