Excerpt from Sports Extra: Classics of Sports Reporting

It has been said that much of the best and most arresting writing to be found in American newspapers appears on the sport pages, a thesis we do not intend to stress or substantiate. The only purpose of this book is to present representative specimens of sportswriting that have inspired highly favorable and flattering acceptance of the men who report sport as competent craftsmen in their special field.

This, admittedly, is not an authoritative anthology of all the outstanding sport stories written in the last fifty, or even five, years. The literature of sport is so extensive that it is manifestly impossible to include in one volume all the men who merit recognition. Of necessity, the list has been restricted to one typical piece by a comparative handful of name writers who are known nationally. This arbitrary arrangement has eliminated many deserving brothers in the lodge and the complete exclusion of writers on small-town papers where, for all anyone knows, the Lardners, Runyons and Peglers of the 1950's may be flourishing.

A book twice the length of this one would, perforce, overlook many stories considered "classics" by the readers, writers and their close relatives.
