Piet Van Land and Anja, the girl next door, discover love while living under German occupation during World War II in Holland. On the day before the war ends the Van Land family overpowers a German soldier, Kurt. They imprison him in their home. On the day the war ends, the soldier escapes. A mob, high on liberation fervour, chases him. Piet, the main character, hides the soldier from the murderous mob. Anja, whose father had been shot by the Germans, avenges his death by killing the soldier. Together the teenagers hide the body. Can they live with their guilt?
