Street Children Phenomenon

As in many developing countries, Kenya is experiencing a serious and escalating street children problem to which no appropriate solution has been found. This book, describing a research study by the author, was prompted by the current critical increase in street children in Eldoret, Kenya and the absence of intervention and rehabilitation policies, programs, and strategies. Based on the voices of street children, community representatives, and professionals, this book explores how street children survive and how they can effectively be helped. Despite harsh circumstances, these children exhibit strong resilience by engaging in various job-related activities, managing their earnings well, developing social support networks, forming groups to meet their basic physical and psychological needs, using safety measures, and having hopes and dreams. The aspect of resiliency represents a key addition to the knowledge base on street children. The book's analysis not only targets the Eldoret Municipal Council and other local governments as to policy and program development, but also the social work profession in Kenya and other Third World countries
