Structural Analysis of Deep-Water Pipelines

The depletion of most onshore and near shore
off-shore oil reserves has shifted the focus of
petroleum exploration and production to deep water
off-shore word wide. Owing to the greater depths and
different type of related physical environment and
associated risks involved i.e. deep-water, the future
pipelines need to be designed and analyzed with a
different approach as compared to those onshore. The
work presents a comprehensive yet concise structural
analysis methodology of a deep water pipeline. The
parameter investigated is expected-but-unforeseeable
axial change in length coupled with deflection as a
result of a conceptual before-service hydrostatic
testing of a fairly long deep-water pipeline section.
Various simple, plausible and most commonly
confronted physical scenarios and situations in
off-shore pipeline laying are presented with
different possible corresponding loading schemes and,
analyzed and discussed before delineating the
conclusions. It has been endeavored to implement both
analytical and numerical solution where ever possible
supported by consistent background theory for
adequate understanding.
