The tunes are one of the world°s leading fishery resources. They are widely distributed in temperate, semiutropical and tropical waters, and although they have been fished for many centuries off Europe, Northern Africa, and Asia, and more recently in the Western Hemisphere and the midacific, comparatively little is known concerning them. Preliminary research indicates that there may be large populations of tune in the mid~pacific and in other areas that are not now fished, and it is possible that they are one of the worldos great food reserves.
