Excerpt from Tales for Sportsmen

This little collection of tales for sportsmen hardly requires a preface, most of them having already appeared between Baily's green covers and in various weekly sporting papers, but a preface is usually expected, and especially from unknown authors who generally seize the opportunity to disarm, or try at least to disarm, stern or venomous critics by explaining their modest ambition in venturing to publish a book.

It has been an amusement to write these tales, and now that they are brought together with the addition of illustrations by an artist whose well-known pencil needs no comment, if the sportsmen of Great Britain will accept them a gratified author will be almost satisfied. To be thoroughly satisfied depends on the sale, but one word is necessary in offering these stories to the public.
