His last memorable act was an attempt to bring about a peace with Spain, in which he was opposed by the Earl of Essex, to whom the statesman pointed out these words in the Psalms, "Men of blood shall not live out half their days."

It is a very ancient and true proverb, that "War is pleasant to none but to those who have never tried it."

Protected by her insular situation, and happy in her many and blessed privileges as a nation, England dwells in security, and breaks her daily bread in peace.
