Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Florida: Jacksonville, February 1, 1899Violent storms along the coast during the Fall effected serious damage to some of the quarantine stations, notably at Fernandina, where a tidal wave carried away the super structure of the station, and it is recommended that the Legislature appropriate funds to rebuild this plant. Through the courtesy and kindness of Captain Gillette, of the U. S. Engineer Corps, a lease has been effected with the War Department for a site on the old Fort Clinch Reservation on Amelia Island, where nearness to deep water will obviate the necessity for a long pier, and where the buildings and all needful accessories can be erected, it is estimated, for six thousand dollars.
