Excerpt from The Aeneid of Vergil: Books I-Vi, Selections VII-XII, With and Introduction, Notes, Index and Vocabulary

In writing the Commentary my fundamental reliance has been upon my own study of the poem. The first draft of the notes was written out with little direct reference to other commentaries. This done, I compared my notes with those of all the more common English and German editions. American editions I have put aside entirely while preparing my book, any resem blances between them and this book are due to use of the same authorities, ancient or modem, or to the use of the texts in class work as a student or teacher during the past.
