Shintoism is the native religion of Japan, and provides a link between modern day Japan and its history that serves to remind the Japanese people of what Japan was like before Westernizing reforms in the nineteenth century. Shintoism is highly integrated with the other major Eastern philosophies, particularly Buddhism. As one facet of a complex spirituality, Shintoism represents a uniquely Japanese approach.
