Towards the east the line of vision passed above clusters of second growth timber and numerous patches of hazel and brier to the level and weedy marsh-lands beyond these was the inlet or bay, and still farther away through the evergreen foliage of a narrow peninsula could be caught glimpses of the glassy surface of a great lake. On the South was a Slightly undulated prairie, dotted here and there with groups of hickory, walnut, and oak, interspersed with thorn, Wild plum, and crab. To the west, and encroaching on the prairie-land somewhat, were enclosed and cultivated fields.
