In October, 1898, the Argonaut lay off the pier at Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. She had just finished a tedious voyage from Balti more, where she was built, and she was quietly anchored from a barrel buoy. Mr. Lake had invited Mr. Stevens, the artist, and myself to make a trip with him on the bottom of the ocean. As we walked up the pier, we watched eagerly for the first glimpse Of the wonderful sea-wagon Of which we had heard so many strange stories.
