A young Brazilian boy, Pedro, and his American friend, Spud, explore the Big River, romp through the tangled green jungle, and discover a huge dark ship in the sand. During all their adventures, Pedro dreams of becoming a sea captain, and finally, as he develops the qualities of a leader, earns the honor of wearing a Captain's hat.
