The Church Plate of Pembrokeshire

Excerpt from The Church Plate of Pembrokeshire: To Which Is Added the Chantry Certifications Relating to the County of Pembroke by the Commissioners of 2 Edward IV (1548), Extracts From the Returns of Church Goods in 6& 7 Edward Vi (1552-1553), And Notes on the Dedications of Pembrokeshire Churches

In the County of Pembroke, which is one of the six comprising in whole oi in part the Diocese of St. David's, there are now 158 Churches and Chapels. They will be found arranged in alphabetical order. All general references to Hall marks relate to the London assay. The letters O. E. P. signify "Old English Plate" by Mr. W. J. Cripps, C. B. I am indebted to Mrs. W. J. Cripps (Countess Bismark) for valuable suggestions, Dr. Henry Owen of Poyston for assistance in identifying many of the donors, Mr. C. F. Egerton Allen of Tenby for notes concerning the Armorials, and my brother the Rev, A. W. Wade-Evans, for help on the subject of the Patron Saints of Pembrokeshire. A Chronological List of the Plate and a General Index will be found at the end of the volume. Mr. H. J. L. J. Massé's excellent work "Pewter Plate" has been of great service. I have personally examined the Church Plate in every parish in Pembrokeshire (the Deanery of Kemes in June 1903, the rest of the County in 1904), and take this opportunity of conveying to all the Clergy my very sincere thanks for their unvarying courtesy. The Introduction is an attempt to give a brief historical sketch of the subject, together with a résumé of the Ecclesiastical Plate in the premier County of Wales.
