Excerpt from The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire, Vol. 1

I proposed, in the circular issued seven years ago, to print privately only sufficient Copies for subscribers at 10s. 6d., the issue to be limited to one edition only, and the blocks to be dispersed at a nominal rate by sale to anyone immediately on publication. Wood engraving has very rapidly died out, and these examples have a double value now, as they are sure to be esteemed by the collectors of antiquities. The fifty large paper copies announced at a guinea each have been abandoned, and the issue in demy octavo is so limited that the price will increase whenever one finds its way into the market. Stone carvings, church windows, roof paintings, memorial tablets, and county and local histories supply the bulk Of the inform ation:-utility tot-he general historian and genealogist, as well as book-plate collector, will be acknowledged by those who are constantly enquiring for such a key. NO such work exists for Yorkshire, and no hand-book is more urgently needed by local antiquaries.

A second part (it is hoped), completing the work for Yorkshire, will be issued speedily if there is a ready response.
