The Editorship was undertaken by the late robert Scum sowler, Esq, q.c., a gentleman well qualified by his literary tastes, and the interest he took in Ringley, where, as senior warden, he laid the foundation stone of the present church in 1850.

Mr. Sowler made a few memoranda upon the letters, which I have distinguished by the initials R S. S but at his death in 1873 he had not made any further progress, and the preparation of the letters was suspended till the Council of the Chetham Society entrusted them to me.
