The Descriptive and Physiological Anatomy of the Brain, Spinal Cord, and Ganglions, and of Their Coverings

Excerpt from The Descriptive and Physiological Anatomy of the Brain, Spinal Cord, and Ganglions, and of Their Coverings: Adapted for the Use of Students

The following pages are a reprint of the article "Nervous Centres" in the Cyclopædia of Anatomy and Physiology, with several additions, and some alterations suggested by its re-perusal as it again passed through the press.

The Author has been induced to submit this book to the public in its present shape, by the frequent complaints which have reached him from students and others, of the want of a description of the brain and spinal cord, embodying the most recent observations on the anatomy of these important organs.

He is not vain enough to suppose that he has succeeded in completely supplying this defect. On the contrary he is conscious of many imperfections, he has, indeed, found it necessary to leave many points incomplete, in consequence of the great difficulty of coming to a decisive conclusion respecting them, preferring to incur the charge of having given a superficial description, to advancing a positive statement on insufficient evidence.
