The Doom of Mac Diarmid

Excerpt from The Doom of Mac Diarmid: An Oriental Legend of the Gael

In the reign of Shah Hussein, who has been described as one of the most bigoted sovereigns that ever ruled over Persia, although of an indolent and rather mild disposition, the various provinces of that country experienced greater miseries than under the most cruel depotism.

Mirvais, an Afghan nobleman, who had resided for some time at the court of Isfahan, determined to render his native land independent, and for this purpose invited the principal Persian governors thereof to a banquet at Candahar, where in the midst of the revels they were assassinated by a number of youths disguised in female apparel.

The facility whereby Mirvais subsequently dispersed the royal troops from Afghanistan, and became chief of that province, induced him to raise his ambitious views even to the throne of Persia. He was however prevented by death from accomplishing his design.
