What might perhaps be an additional inducement to this gentleman to leave the Rage at the time he did, when, as he himfelf tells us, though it began to grow late in life with him, yet, Rill having health and Rrength enough to have been as ufeful on the Rage as ever, he was under no vifible neceliity of quitting it, inightte his having, in the year 1730, on the death of Mr. Ext/den, been promoted to the vacant laurel, the fa. Lary annexed to which, together with what he had faved from the emoluments of the theatre, and the fale of his {hare in the patent, fet him above the nece¿ity of continuing on it. - And after a number of years pafs'd in the utmor cafe, gaiety, and good-humour, he de pa: ted this life towards the latter end of the year 1757, having jur completedhis 86th year.
