The English Black Monks of St. Benedict, Vol. 2 of 2

Excerpt from The English Black Monks of St. Benedict, Vol. 2 of 2: A Sketch of Their History From the Coming of St. Augustine to the Present Day

The dissensions existing in England had their full effect on the seminaries abroad. Whatever the designs of the superiors may have been, the seminarists, as a body, had no inclination to become political agents for any one. As Mr. R. Simpson remarks: "There is no manner of doubt that the heads of the seminaries, Allen at Rheims and Agazzari at Rome, wished it to be so. But it was on this very point that so many divisions arose in these colleges. The great majority of students wished to be martyrs, not for a political plot, but for religion, they wished to be Christ's ministers, not Philip's soldiers. And they repudiated honestly and heartily all designs of political meddling.
