Santa Anna saw the disaffection, knew there was no time to be lost, and resolved to secure the throne of Anahuac while power was yet in his hands, with a promise of aid from the other provinces. Texas unfurled her banner, and declared, not hostility to the government, but allegiance to the spirit of the constitution. The chief saw his danger, the priests saw their danger, and their combined power was directed against chivalric Texas. Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, and one or two other provinces, raised the stand ard of revolt, but when the anathemas of the growing tyrant went forth, Viva los Santa Anna! Rang along their lines, and these cow ardly and hypocritical allies left Texas to stand or fall, as destiny might determine.
