The plot here is a Chinese-American man has two sons. One follows the Chinese traditions. The other is thoroughly Americanized. The father claims the right to decide which woman his sons will marry.The book runs in the opposite direction as the movie. While the movie follows two Chinese girls seeking to marry the right man, in the book it is the two sons of Master Wang who must find a suitable girl to marry.Flower Drum Song was also a musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It premiered on Broadway in 1958 and was then performed in the West End and on tour. The movie was ground breaking because every actor who appeared in the movie is Chinese-American. It was the "first big-budget American film" with an all-Asian cast. From the policeman who starts to arrest them in the opening scene and the Chinese lady who reads the note in Chinese that tells them where to go, all of them are Chinese who live in USA and you can find them in Chinatown in San Francisco, New York or in Flushing Queens.
