The Gilman House

Excerpt from The Gilman House: Being a History of the Dwelling House Erected in Exeter New Hampshire About 1740 by Dr. Dudley Odlin, Occupied During Three Generations by the Gilman FamilyThe Rev. John Odlin had sons Elisha, Dudley, and Woodbridge. The first and third of these, after graduating from Harvard College, entered the ministry. Woodbridge was made colleague with his aged father, and after the latter's death was elected to succeed him. The com bined pastorates of father and son covered about seventy years. Elisha was called to the ministry of the church in Amesbury, where he remained until his death. It need hardly be said that, at a period when the ministerial office in itself was the object of such veneration, the Odlin family must have occupied in the town a position of great dignity and in¿uence. This position was rendered even more secure by the possession of large wealth.'About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
