Excerpt from The Happy Valley

On a certain dull morning towards the end of May, among the pile of letters accompanying my early tea, I found an envelope marked " urgent, " and, tearing it open, read the following despatch : -

"Brunswick Mansions,

Victoria Street, S.W.
(Tuesday night)

"Dear Rachel, -Prepare for a shock! I am about to take your breath away! Will you join my party to Norway on the 10th of next month ? One of the rods has failed me, and if you care to step into his shoes, I am giving you the first offer. You have often wondered what sort of life we lead in our so-called 'Happy Valley.' I hereby invite you, as paying guest, to come and see. Come and live among us for ten weeks, and share all our little joys and sorrows. (There are, strictly speaking, no sorrows.)
