The Kam People of China

The Kam People of China

One meaning of "kam" in the Kam language is to cover and conceal', and the name Kam perhaps refers to people who hide', removing themselves to remote areas in the interests of self-preservation. The Kam are still essentially a hidden people' - very little has been published in English about them. This book aims to fill a gap in the English literature, by providing a comprehensive introduction to Kam culture. The Kam, also known as the Dong, are a minority of 2.5 million people living in three provinces and one autonomous region in central southern China. Their population ranks them as the eleventh largest of China's fifty-five minority nationalities. The Kam people are rice farmers with a flair for carpentry. They speak a language special for its many tones. Besides this, they have a strong singing culture which is perhaps unparalleled throughout the rest of China. The book represents a cooperative effort between Chinese and foreign students. Four Kam professors passed on their knowledge to two Europeans who in turn distilled this knowledge, added their own, and researched a little more. Everything was then ordered into a manuscript intended both to inform and to excite the interest of the English-speaking readers, intended to be objective and scientific on one hand, and sympathetic and interesting on the other. In the conclusion to the book, the authors take a look into the future for the Kam people and their culture. Students or scholars with particular interests in China or in its minority people will appreciate the book. So will non-scholars with similar interests, and anyone with a special interest in the Kam people.
