I explained my ideas to Mr. Henry Gurney, who very kindly gave me every encouragement in his power to carry out the work. There was reason to think that such a book would be accepted at the present time, on account of the increasing interest that is taken in Morocco. It is of considerable importance that the British public should clearly understand the state of affairs of that country, and that it should urge on with all its power the reforma tion of the Moorish government, and remove the terrible cruelties that are carried on under it, which to my mind are nothing short of a disgrace to us as a Christian nation.
