Originally published in 1914. The Lady Next Door is an account of Ireland by a pro Home-Rule British Liberal journalist. It provides valuable personal impressions of prominent Nationalists and Southern Unionists, a snapshot of views and expectations of what Home Rule would be like. He gives insight into the ideological tensions of the Liberal-Nationalist alliance, particularly Nonconformist unease about the prospects for Ulster under Home Rule, the development of moralist rhetoric in defense of Liberal policy, and the British idealization of Ireland as a pious rural Arcadia.
