The violence spun out of control when some politicians exploited it for personal benefit. Counter measures by the authorities proved ineffective in stopping the spread of disorder. The effort of the town's revivalist preacher to shield some of the neighborhood's youth from the carnage that engulfed the city proved mildly successful.
