The Legal Profession

Excerpt from The Legal Profession: Viewed in the Light of Its Past History, Its Present State, and Projected Law Reforms

We can still apply to the unsullied ermine of Westminster Hall the language of Lord Erskine, who, in his maiden speech, addressing Lord Mansfield, said: - "That torrent of corruption, which has unhappily overwhelmed every other part of the Constitution, is, by the blessing of God, stopped here by the sacred independence of the Judges." That eight Judges should have devoted three whole days to the hearing of Mr. Edwin James's appeal, is a remarkable proof of the desire of the existing Bench that the silk of the Senior Bar should be unsullied, also.

The Attorneys and Solicitors of England are, likewise, a highly independent body of gentlemen, and their system of discipline, education, and representation of professional interests is by no means contemptible. To an Attorney or Solicitor, writhing under a sense of social wrong inflicted upon his order, it must be some consolation to peruse the Pamphlets, dealing with the subject-matter of this volume in an incisive manner, that have issued from the Press in recent years.
