Excerpt from The Life and Recollections of John Howland: Late President of the Rhode Island Historical Society

Tms volume was mostly written as the recreation of invalid hours, during the winter succeeding Mr. Howland's decease. On the return of health, a press of professional duties caused it to be laid aside, to be completed at a more convenient season. Until recently the Opportunity has not occurred. Delay, how ever, has been attended with advantage. By it, valuable mate rials have come into the author's possession which otherwise would not have been available.
