Excerpt from The Life of Major-General Worge, Colonel of the 86th Regiment of Foot, and Governor of Senegal, in Africa: With an Account of the Settlements of Senegal and Goree

This is apparent from the way in which the settlements were ultimately again abandoned to France, the loose way in which the Treaties surrendering them, and providing for the welfare of the British trade in those quarters, were conducted and carried out, and what has naturally followed, the French aggression upon the British merchants trading to the coast of Portendic lately committed, and the difference between Great Britain and France relative to compensation for the same still pending.

This has been among the considerations that have prompted me, but with a very feeble pen, to this memoir of a relation whose memory I honour and respect, being moreover emboldened to it by the kind permission of the General's more immediate relatives, and also by the hope that the public may feel an interest in some of the details.
