In ofi'ering the public another biography of Lafayette, the motives are similar to those which induced the author to write the Life of Josephine. It is true, the history of this great man has been given in various memoirs, but not a full and chronologically correct record of his eventful and brilliant career. Besides, his character may be more carefully analyzed and studied in the light of recent deve lopments, which add a new interest to portions OP his his tory, formerly involved in a good deal of obscurity.
