Salt was an English writer and campaigner for social reform in fields such as prisons, schools and the treatment of animals. He was also a noted ethical vegetarian, anti-vivisectionist, socialist and pacifist. This work was first published in 1899 and is reprinted from the revised second edition of 1906.
