The Machine Abolished

Excerpt from The Machine Abolished: And the People Restored to PowerMV dear sir As the Democratic Mayor of the City of Oswego elected in 1892 and in 1893, I became well informed in regard to the sentiments of the voters of that city concerning the non-partisan or town-meeting system of elections devised by you, and urged upon the State Legislature in the sessions of 1893 and 1894, and which I myself was heartily in favor oi. The measure was heartily approved of with substantial unanimity by the people of that city immediately upon your describing and explaining it in the public prints, and was asked for, either by signatures to petitions or in personal letters to those in power at Albany, by an overwhelming majority of the tax paying and more intelligent classes of voters in both parties. In fact, the only opposition to it here that I heard of came from a small handful of self-seeking politicians, also of both parties, who, how ever, were able, I am sorry to say, to persuade a Democratic Governor to kill it by a veto after it had passed both houses of the Legislature.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
