Magna Carta is a royal charter drafted by Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton in coordination with the English barons. Intended to resolve disputes between King John of England and the Pope, Magna Carta was agreed to on June 15, 1215. Although initially unsuccessful, it has since been recognized as a foundational document on the rights and liberties of citizens.
