Excerpt from The Mineral Structure of Some Victorian Rocks

The rocks examined by me may be classed as follows. (In the following remarks I have described the rocks according to their occurrence in the several localities examined.)

Rocks of the Coal District of S. Gippsland: - During the progress of the surveys of the coal-bearing areas in South Gippsland, samples of the sedimentary rocks of different localities were collected to illustrate the mineral composition of the beds, with a view to determine, if possible, their origin (or relation to the formations from which they were derived), and also samples of the eruptive rocks which have disturbed the coal-beds, in order to determine their minerals structure and probable age. The general mineral features of the eruptive rocks forming either dykes, bosses, or volcanic plugs from such localities as San Remo, Kilcunda, Bass Valley, Korumburra, Jumbunna, Meeniyan, Mirboo, Yarragon, Bena, Cruikstown, etc., suggest that they all belong to the Gabbro-Basalt family, and that they are of kainozoic age.
