The Mouse Grown a Rat

Excerpt from The Mouse Grown a Rat: Or the Story of the City and Country Mouse Newly Transpos'd, in a Discourse Betwixt Bays, Johnson, and Smith

Johnston, Mr. Bays, I esteem it a great piece of Condescension in you, that you will admit us into your Company, after you have acquired such vast Riches, and procured such weighty Honours and are set at such a vast Distance from Men of our Quality.

Smith. Indeed, Mr. Bay, I have the same Apprehensions, methinks you are grown like a lofty Oak overtopping the Underwood, and if you deign to cast a Look downwards on us poor Shrubs, we must impute it more to your own good Nature than our Defects, we cannot expect from the high Pinnacle on which you are perch'd, you should know us poor Mortals, by such a Distance lessened almost out of Sight.

Bays. Know you, quotha, I vow Gentlemen, I hardly know my self, my mighty Bulk does even elevate and surprize, and all that, my own transcendent Fancy.
