Excerpt from The Numismatic Chronicle, and Journal of the Numismatic Society, Vol. 5: April, 1842 January, 1843IN May, 1840, some workmen were employed in Guer dale, near Preston in Lancashire, upon an estate of W. Assheton, Esq., of Downham Hall, in carrying earth to fill in the ground which had been washed away behind a wall formerly built to protect the banks of the river Ribble. In digging for this purpose, at a distance of about forty yards from the banks, they discovered a large mass of silver, consisting of ingots of various Sizes, a few silver armlets tolerably entire, several fragments, and a few ornaments of some other description, cut into small pieces to facilitate the melting, amounting to 974 oz. 10 dwts., exclusive of about 6 or coins of various descriptions, the whole having been inclosed in a leaden chest, which was so decom posed that only small portions of it could be secured.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
