The solo pieces teach students to play with artistry and expression and reinforce the positions used in the Note Reading book: G positions, F position, and D position. They are encouraged to tell a story" through the music as they follow the many changes in dynamics, tempo, pedaling, articulation and octave shifts. Pieces are one to two pages in length, some have lyrics. Titles such as Bernie's Banana Tree, Rockin' Rhythm, and Waltz of the Giant Gorillas appeal to young musicians.
